Help On Digital Cameras

Which is the best Canon HV20, Sony HDR-HC7, Panasonic HDC-SD1, JVC GZ-HD7?—♣ Doc H ♣

I would say the miniDV tape based cams. They do not push you into highly compressed AVCHD (HDV compression is a LOT less than AVCHD and compressed video = lost data - reduced video quality).

So… that drops the Panasonic HDC-SD1 off the list.

The JVC GZ-HD7 is AWSOME in that it is hard drive based but does not use AVCHD… but it does use a rather proprietary MPEG2 compression method, so be very careful with this - and be sure the video editor you plan to use can deal with the format. There are other reasons why internal hard drive camcorders fall off my short list - like the extra step needed to archive video… remember, in miniDV tape, the tape IS the archive…

So… that leaves the Canon HV20 and Sony HDR-HC7 (why not the HV30 and HDR-HC9?)

Both are really good consumer grade camcorders. Both have 1/8″ mic-in jacks (than can be expanded to use XLR mics by use of a BeachTek adapter) and manual audio control. Both also have manual focus, zoom and iris/exposure… but I think I would have to give the nod to camcorderinfo.com’s 2007 camcorder of the year because of the “24p cinematic” capabilities of the HV20.
